The Jealous God by Terry Simpson

This is a truth about God that is long overdue in our postmodern world of many gods or many ways to God. As a member of a Baptist church for nine of my first 21 years I believed that there were many ways to God. Then I got saved! The only Savior there is saved me and by God’s grace I saw that the Bible teaches there is only one way to God. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except by Me.” (Jn.14:6) The fact that there is one God and only one way to God is the basis of God’s jealousy. The first of the Ten Commandments teaches that there is only one God and the second teaches that there is only one way to Him. And in the context of this God says of Himself, “For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.” (Ex.20:1-6) He pronounces curses and judgment upon those who would have other gods and offer sacrifices to other gods, thinking they were getting to the one true God. “He who sacrifices to any god, except to the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed.” (Ex.22:20) The New Testament makes it clear; sacrifices to other gods are actually sacrifices to demons. All other gods are demons. “The things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God.” (1Cor.10:20) Exodus 34:14 declares that one of God’s names is Jealous: “for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” Jealousy is a part of the very character of God.
Beloved, never before in the history of the world has this truth of the jealousy of God been more needed. For example, the most famous of the New Age apostles of our time is Oprah Winfrey. Millions of adoring fans are following her into “the depths of Satan” as she conducts her daily TV program and her “New Earth Web Class” which now has over 2,000,000 in attendance weekly. This is a quote from her TV program, “There are many ways and many paths to what you call god. There couldn’t possibly be just one way.” And she started believing this while she was sitting in church! “I was able to open my mind about the absolute, indescribable hugeness of that which we call God. I took God out of the box. Because I grew up in the Baptist church and there were rules and belief systems and doctrines, and I happened to be sitting in church in my late 20’s and I was going to this church where you had to get there at 8 o’clock in the morning or you couldn’t get a seat. A very charismatic minister and everybody was into the sermon. And this great minister was preaching about how great God was, how omniscient and omnipresent, and God is everything and then he said, ‘the Lord is a jealous God.’ And I was caught up in the rapture of that moment; until he said “jealous.’ And something struck me. I was thinking ‘God is all, God is omnipresent, and then God is also jealous. God is jealous of me.’ And something about that didn’t feel right in my spirit because I believe that God is love and that God is in all things, and so that’s when the search for something more than doctrine started to stir within me. And I love this quote from Dr. Eckhart, ‘Man made God in his own image. The eternal, infinite and unnamable was reduced to a mental idol that you had to believe in and worship as my God or our God.’ (Oprah again…) God is a feeling experience, not a believing experience. If God for you is a belief, then it’s not truly god.”
There are so many things wrong with her statements that I scarcely know how to begin to expose the fallacy of her theology and philosophy. I’ll leave that to you. But here are some things to start with. The fact that God is love does not eliminate jealousy, it requires it! My love for my wife requires that I am jealous for her affection. If I were to see her giving her love to another (or others) I would be very jealous, because I love her. And to say that if you believe something about God then it’s not truly God! That’s ridiculously illogical. When she tells us if we believe anything about God then it’s not God, she’s telling us what to believe about God! Her whole program is devoted to doctrines (teachings) about God! She has reduced “the indescribably hugeness of God” down to a good feeling. And in doing so, she has declared the Bible to be wrong. When she describes God, she is telling us what to believe about God! Her authority for what she “believes” is her own feelings. Furthermore, the whole of the Bible and the revelation of God is based on what to believe about God. “Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And then there’s John 3:16?
All of this, of course, is what happens when you get smarter than the Word of God about God. She is a very powerful, eloquent and influential woman, helping to lead a whole generation of deceived people into hell. I applaud that pastor who was preaching the day she became an apostate. He was right. (I only hope that he explained the thing about love being jealous.) We need to teach people about God today more than any other time. Ignorance and unbelief abound, and both roads lead to hell. I have devoted myself to teach the truth about God, as He has revealed Himself in the Bible and in Jesus Christ.
